Italian-Swedish, associate professor of philosophy at the University of Stockholm and one of Europe's leading experts on nonviolence in general and Mahatma Gandhi in particular. Pontara divides his time between Stockholm and Rovereto, Italy, where he is the president of the Scientific Committee for the International University for Peoples' Initiative for Peace, IUPIP. He has been a member of the International NGO Tribunal for ex-Yugoslavia. His research interests focus, apart from political philosophy, nonviolence and Gandhi, on conflict-resolution, ethics for future generations and the role of NGOs in the global system.
